Failing the CS Exam? Here's How to Bounce Back

25th February and 25th August time 11AM. almost all of us who have took the Company Secretary exam along with our family members be it Mom, Dad ,hubby, wife and in my case my child as well, we all are eagerly waiting to see 150+ marks along with those magical words “PASS” on our mark sheet. We type our seat no and the browser is searching for your result.

Those 30 to 40 seconds of time feels like a lifetime of wait. It feels like we are stranded on a deserted land on an excruciating sunny day. Your throat is dry, your BP is high and your prayers are at the peak, as if you are shouting in the ears 👂of GOD that “Please God iss bar bohot mehnat ki hai, is bar pass karade 🙏“.

Anticipation hangs heavy in the air as everyone waits for the browser to reveal the results. , the browser has done its job and your result is out. If you are the luckiest one your result is positive and you are blessed with the magical no 150+ and the magical word PASS.

But this blog is for the once whose dreams are shattered😢 who are yet to see those words on the result day. Trust me, I have been there, have gone through it and I am here to share my story with you all.

I am indeed just one of all of you. I am married woman blessed with a child  at my very young age i.e. in my late 40’s😜, juggling between the daily chores, family responsibilities, handling my kids studies along with  my  studies.

I have always taken as much as I could probably chew in my own individual circumstances. What I mean is, that I have always taken only one module at a time and cracked it, coz I knew I won’t be able to clear more than that in one go.

📚 I use to religiously give my 3months undivided attention to my studies, whereby I use to plan and study for at least 14 to15 hours a day.

Frankly I should say night, coz my day time use to be consumed with my daily chores and other responsibilities like taking care of my child his study etc. So I use to basically study at night time generally till 5am in the morning till my body use to give up😪

💪I had the strongest support of my hubby who use to take care of it all, single handedly in the last 2 weeks just before and during my exams.

I have and I am sure that all of you have sacrificed on all the occasions, celebrations, weddings and other important events. For example in my case missing my child’s sports day celebration, annual day etc.

During this time passing the exam becomes the sole focus in your life.".

I cleared all my executive papers in first attempt.🏆 And by the end of it I was so confident, that clearing CS is a cake walk for me. To my surprise in my first attempt of two of my professional modules my confidence was crashed. Unfortunately, I failed the exam.".😨😭

I remember clearly that my exam went on too well and I was damn sure of passing it all. And on the result day we typed my seat no and there it was, the result was "Fail". I failed by very little margin.

I couldn’t believe my eyes and checked it thrice but alas. It was a failure for sure.

I cried my eyes out and started blaming everything in anger.

I blamed on my luck followed with the Institute I also felt that probably they must have not  checked the papers and gave result [ I know these are very controversial thoughts I am sharing here] But to be honest with you, these were the thoughts that crossed my mind and I was damn sure that this was the only truth.

As I had put in all my efforts and there was nothing that I lacked, still the result was absolutely  not acceptable to me.

But then after all the emotional turbulence was over,  I sat calmly & thought that how come I am failing with such a small margin. My husband uttered “Seema you are almost there, but there’s something that’s lacking and probably that is pulling you down” .

There it was the answer to my question.💡

I thought instead of blaming my luck and the Institute, I must first introspect and check, what could be probably going wrong in my preparation. I went through some of the video's on YouTube on, "what are the areas of improvement ?, what exactly should we focus upon etc. And I found my answers.

I am listing them down below, yours could be different but these are mine which might help you.

1.    I being a Science student, I always believed and did self-study. My way of preparing was to go through the module, understand it and then putting it in easy words while answering.

In Executive level it worked because I feel, there they check whether you have understood the logic behind it or not, but when you enter Professional era remember that the Institute equips you with the skills to become a successful professional.

So your answers are supposed to be framed in Professional words and in professional manner.

Ø   Ø👉I read the answers in professional words tried to absorb it. Also tried to think in professional language. Basically at this level you have to start thinking in professional language to be able to recreate your answers in that language.

 2.   In case of Executive level even if you do not mention Section numbers it’s okay as far as you have understood the gist of Law [ Please note this is my personal observation, not that I am claiming that you should not give section numbers in Executive level, in fact if you do, you are at a better position to crack this exam]

In professional level you are suppose to give Section references as and when you can. I know it’s not easy to remember all the section no’s but there’s a trick of remembering them which could be very personal but I might share it in my future blogs.

So you are suppose to give section numbers as far as possible

Ø👉  I made a separate list of Section numbers that I reviewed frequently during breaks.

 3.      You are suppose to remember the case studies their names and references, in my case I use to remember case studies but I never use to remember the names of the parties to cases. So I realized this wasn’t working.

So you have to remember the case studies along with  the names of the parties to the case.

Ø👉   I prepared a separate list of case studies  that I reviewed frequently during breaks, to recreate it in my paper.

 4.   4.   Appearing 100% paper, without leaving even 5marks in case you don’t know the answer.

Its utmost important to attempt the complete paper, even if you don’t know a particular answer in detail you have to make an attempt to think logically and give its answer. Make sure you attempt that question. Because the person correcting paper even if he knows that the answer is not up to the mark. He might just check if you are thinking in right direction and in that case even if he gives you 1 mark. That 1 mark can make hell lot of difference. Isn’t it?

Appear hundred percent paper

Ø👉  You all must probably be already doing this. We allocate no of minutes to each question . In my case use to keep the difficult question to the last and kept a minute or 2 extra for me to scratch my head and prepare the answer. Fortunately I had only one time when I had to use this strategy.

So the moral of the story is that please don’t get disappointed with failure, as I always believed and said that, "if you have failed once in such competitive exams, it’s a good sign" .

Take it as a good omen, coz now that you have failed you can only PASS.

Trust me our Institute is just pushing us to the wall, to get the best version of the professional we can be. Please introspect, prepare a list, believe in yourself and restart your journey .

Remember, you are already there, you just have to push that door and enter into the world of Professionals.

TRUST ME IF I CAN BE A COMPANY SECRETARY, YOU SURELY CAN BE .

INFACT  IF YOU ARE ALREADY ON THE JOURNEY THEN YOU ARE BORN TO BE ONE.

SO RISE AND SHINE MY STARS AND LET’S LIGHT UP THE WORLD.
